Alexei Evangulov, the Russian performance director of British Diving who publicly criticised Tom Daley for taking on too much media work in the run-up to the Olympics, says the teenager’s brilliant recent form has “scared” his Chinese rivals.
Tom Daley - London 2012 Olympics: Alexei Evangulov believes that Team GB diver Tom Daley is 'scaring' rivals

Daley, who turns 18 in a week’s time, won the four-event World Series crown with a lifetime-best score in the final round in Mexico last month and will be the favourite to add to his collection of titles when he competes at the European Championships in Eindhoven, which begin on Tuesday.

His resurgent form is in stark contrast to his disappointing showing at the World Cup in London’s Olympic Aquatics Centre in February when he and partner Pete Waterfield finished a lacklustre seventh in the synchro final, and Evangulov believes Daley is now back in the “medal range” for this summer’s Games.

“Everything is going according to plan,” said Evangulov. “Thomas was not quite ready for the World Cup. He lacked a couple of weeks to be better prepared.

“But after the World Cup, the World Series went perfectly. In all four events he showed he is ready to fight for a medal at the Olympics. He scared the Chinese dramatically.”

Before the World Cup, Evangulov went public with his fears that Daley’s media commitments were harming his medal prospects, likening him to former celebrity tennis player Anna Kornikova and claiming his Chinese rivals “trained three times harder”.

But he refuses to take any credit for Daley’s recent improvement and says the media coverage of his remarks was overblown.

“Frankly speaking, I didn’t like the media reaction,” he said. “That is why I don’t want to talk about it any more. We are in an absolutely new situation now and we have to forget about that.

“All the divers were very irritated by the media reaction and we were not thankful it. What I said was just normal stuff. You can say that it is my role to criticise. I am very demanding and people appreciate it because that’s why I am here. British Swimming invited me to be very strong and to be very demanding.”

Daley, who the European title as a 14 year-old in the same Eindhoven pool, will be competing in only the individual platform event in Holland and not the synchro because Waterfield has a neck problem and has been withdrawn from as a precaution.

The Plymouth diver will hoping for a repeat of his World Series triumph in Tijuana, Mexico, three weeks ago where his best ever points total of 562.85 included a massive score of 105 for his most difficult dive – the front 4½ somersaults.

Significantly, though, reigning world champion Qiu Bo, of China, was absent from Mexico and remains the overwhelming favourite for Olympic gold in London.

On an overcast day in London, the city’s mayor, the chief executive officer of the world’s biggest steelmaker ArcelorMittal (MT), and artist Anish Kapoor congregate at the top of the U.K.’s tallest sculpture.

They’re inaugurating the ArcelorMittal Orbit: a spiraling 114.5-meter (376 foot) lattice of dark-red tubular steel designed by Kapoor and engineer Cecil Balmond. The first view, even on a cloudy morning, stretches from the London 2012 Olympic Park across to the towers of Canary Wharf and of the City financial district.

Taller than the Statue of Liberty and Big Ben, twice as high as Nelson’s column in London’s Trafalgar Square, the Orbit has cost 22.7 million pounds ($36.5 million), of which ArcelorMittal funded as much as 19.6 million pounds. Elevators take reporters to a circular viewing platform at the top. The structure has drawn mixed reviews for its twisted contours. It is a third of the size of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

“For ArcelorMittal, it clearly shows that we can demonstrate how the steel can be used,” says Lakshmi Mittal, whose company employs 260,000 people. “We have got the steel from every steel manufacturing unit of ours, so every employee feels they have participated in the London Olympics and Paralympics.”

“ArcelorMittal would not have sponsored it if it was not made of steel,” he says.
Davos Cloakroom

Moments later, Mittal joins Mayor Boris Johnson on the balcony, a wrap-around walkway of steel mesh, for a combined video interview. The two recall meeting in 2009 in the cloakroom of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where the mayor buttonholed the billionaire.

“Lakshmi and I were both getting our coat back,” says Johnson, as Mittal stands smiling beside him, briefly resting a hand on his shoulder. “In the space of 45 seconds, Lakshmi agreed to fund the project: He said I will give you the steel.”

Did the mayor know the sculpture would be made of steel? “I didn’t,” says Johnson, “but I saw Lakshmi Mittal in the cloakroom, and I thought that steel would be a useful thing to have.”

Mittal says the idea, at first, was for him to “participate in a modest way” and “supply some steel” to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“I never dreamt that this project will become such a large project,” he says. “Boris was so smart, getting me into this discussion and forcing me to make such a big piece of art.”
Eiffel Horror

Earlier, Kapoor and Balmond present the landmark to reporters in a nearby hotel. Balmond says steel was not chosen because of Mittal’s sponsorship offer: It was the most workable material to create a tower that, rather than rest on four legs like the Eiffel Tower, was supported by orbiting around itself. Concrete would not have worked, he says.

Kapoor downplays the controversy around the tower’s look. He says he has researched initial reactions to the Eiffel Tower, and recalls the horror of observers such as author Victor Hugo.

“I think it’s awkward: It has its elbows sticking out, in a way,” says Kapoor. “It refuses to be an emblem.”

“I wanted us to make a work that’s really about experience,” he says. “It’s about going in, going up, being part of.”

To put his mark on a tower that otherwise looks like a feat of engineering, Kapoor has made it red -- a color he uses a lot -- and built a rust-colored steel canopy shaped like an upside- down cone that visitors have to stand underneath before going up the tower. The experience is meant as “a moment of darkness, of weight, perhaps even a little scary,” he explains.

When London marathon ******* director Sanjay Sharma was called to attend someone who had collapsed with suspected cardiac arrest a mile from the finish line last month, he expected to find a man in his seventies.

"I had to hide my horror as I saw a young, athletic woman," he says. "I had to... compose myself for a few seconds before we started resuscitation."

Lying on the ground was 30-year-old Claire Squires, whose sudden death, along with those of Italian footballer Piermario Morosini and Norwegian Olympic swimmer Alexander Dale Oen, has drawn fresh attention to shocking heart problems that bring down young, fit people at the top of their game.

The case of English Premier League footballer Fabrice Muamba, who collapsed on the pitch in front of a stadium packed with spectators last month, has similarly focused minds.

Sharma, who was speaking at a sports science conference in London ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games when an estimated 10,000 athletes will be pushing themselves to the limit in the British capital, urged health professionals to be vigilant.

"Something should be done, if we are... encouraging athletes to push themselves like that," he said. "We protect their musculoskeletal system, we protect their brains, we protect their nutritional status, so why can't we protect their hearts?"

In sudden cardiac death (SCD), the heart abruptly and unexpectedly stops working. Experts describe it as an "electrical problem", often caused by a heart rhythm disorder called ventricular fibrillation.

In sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), which was what brought Bolton Wanderers midfielder Muamba to the ground, the heart is no longer able to pump ***** to the rest of the body.

Fortunately, Muamba recovered but, says University College London sports scientist Richard Weiler, cases like his are likely to continue to crop up despite some screening programs and the main problem is they are still poorly understood.

"Each young athletic life lost to SCD or blighted by a sudden cardiac arrest is a powerful reminder that despite our growing knowledge, we still lack many answers to basic questions about these afflictions," Weiler and a team of other sports science experts wrote in the British Journal of Sports ******** (BJSM) on Saturday.

It was a whirlwind few days for Geno Auriemma and the U.S. women’s Olympic basketball team.

Now they’ll go their separate ways until reconvening July 14 to start training again for the London Games.

“It went by fast,” Auriemma said. “Hopefully coming out of this weekend the players have a better expectation of what I’m looking for from them. Now we’ll see how much they improve over the next two months while they are playing in the WNBA and then we’ll really get started in July.”

The weekend started with a 1½-hour practice on Friday night and concluded with a scrimmage against Japan on Sunday. Sandwiched in between was a 38-point rout of China in an exhibition game.

“The exciting part about it is it’s the beginning,” three-time Olympian Tamika Catchings said. “This is the first time this 12-player roster has been together practicing then to play a game against a great Chinese team, and to pull away like we did, every single person on this team brought something different.

“When you look at going to the Olympics and getting to London, that’s something positive. If we can continue to build off of that and continue to get better, that’ll only make what we do in the end that much more memorable.”

Auriemma used the weekend to try out different combinations of players. It seemed for the most part that whoever he had on the court played well.

“We had a big lineup, a small lineup, a fast lineup, we got a lot of different lineups that we can play,” he said. “It was a chance to see who plays well with each other.”

The only lineup that didn’t see time together was the “All-UConn” lineup. Six of the players on the Olympic team played for Auriemma at Connecticut. While Tina Charles didn’t play all weekend because she was rehabbing a groin injury, the other five never were on the court at the same time.

“I have it in my contract that I can only play so many UConn players at the same time,” Auriemma said with a smile. “Seriously, I know pretty well what they can do and they know what to expect from me. There wasn’t a conscious effort to not put them on the floor together.”

The Americans had their way with Japan in the scrimmage on Sunday. They won all four quarters, giving up just four baskets in the first half. The Japanese players seemed more in awe of their American counterparts than being focused on playing basketball.

After the scrimmage, the Japanese players took photos and asked the Americans for autographs. Two even exchanged jerseys with Diana Taurasi and Catchings.

“That happens a lot,” said Taurasi, who was sporting a Japan warm-up jersey.

While his players will head off to the WNBA, Auriemma will spend a little time scouting over the next few months. He’ll make a quick pit stop in Dallas for an U.S. Olympic media summit. He’ll head over to Turkey in late June to watch the women’s tournament that will determine the final five qualifiers for the London games.

Sprinter Wallace Spearmon is used to rehabilitation; he has been treating injuries since 2005.

"It's a never-ending story," Spearmon said Sunday at the Team USA Media Summit.

Spearmon, who starts and ends every day with physical therapy, hopes his story of healing will finally conclude with a medal at the 2012 Olympics this summer in London.

Spearmon pushed through a torn meniscus in 2005, a fractured bone in 2008 and a left Achilles' tendon injury that kept him out much of last year.

"I've been plagued with injuries," Spearmon said. "But I'm coming back into form. I look like myself again."

At the Beijing Games in 2008, Spearmon finished third in the 200 meters but was denied a bronze medal because he stepped out of his lane.

He has been living in Cedar Hill and training with coach Monte Stratton in Arlington, where he clocked 19.95 in the 200 meters on March 24.

"It looks like this year is going to be the best I've had in quite some time health-wise," Spearmon said. "This is the first time I've actually been healthy leading up to the trials. I really have no idea what I'm capable [of]. I just want to go out and have a day where I run without pain, injury free, where I just see how fast I can run."

Spearmon, who will participate in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials from June 22-July 1 in Eugene, Ore., is motivated by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt's world record of 19.19 in the 200.

"He opened doors for me," Spearmon said. "That made me realize that I can run faster than I thought I could. The faster someone runs, if you are a true competitor, that just lets you know that you can do it as well."

While Bolt and Spearmon are friends, the two are also rivals.

Spearmon said Bolt and his Jamaican teammates will be hard to beat in London, but the U.S. sprinters aren't intimidated.

"None of us are training for second place," he said. "None of us like to lose."

China Network Television (CNTV) in Shanghai announced its new media plan for the London Olympic Games on Friday.

The plan, which aims to put the network, handsets, mobile TV and the iPad together, will give audiences more access to the games, said Xia Xiaohui, deputy general manager of CNTV.

CNTV, the official Internet and mobile phone broadcaster of the London 2012 Olympic Games, will set up a network platform to serve new media, Xia said.

"By doing so we can let audiences watch sports events at any time and anywhere," he said.

CNTV launched a promotion campaign in the city to let audiences in East China know the plan.

It succeeded in disseminating the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 through the Internet, creating a new channel for audiences to watch the events.

"The move broke the TV monopoly of big sports games," he said.

Jin Xiaoxin, operation director of CNTV Sports, said CNTV will telecast live 5,600 hours of Olympic events including 4,300 hours of events CCTV can't telecast because of its limited channels.

He said CNTV will join hands with CCTV to send more than 500 reporters to cover the event in London.

CNTV has broadcast some special programs on the games in the 100-day countdown to the London Olympic Games to help audiences know more about the event, Jin said.
